Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction

What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?

“Mindfulness is about being fully awake in our lives. It is about perceiving the exquisite vividness of each moment. We also gain immediate access to our own powerful inner resources for insight, transformation, and healing.” - Jon Kabat-Zinn

Founder of Mindfulness

John Kabat-Zinn is the founder of mindfulness-based stress reduction.

He is a Ph.D. and Professor and the founding Executive Director of the Centre for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is also the founder director of the Stress Reduction Clinic where he teaches mindfulness and Mindfulness-Based- Stress Reduction. (MBSR) It is here that he utilises his Buddhist teachings on mindfulness having adapted them into a Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program now known as MBSR.

His research is focussed mainly on the mind-body communications as it relates to healing. His research also includes the clinical applications of mindfulness meditation training and how MBSR effects the brain and the immune system, he has written many books and won a myriad of awards for his work.

Mindfulness Defined

The practice of mindfulness is all about observing our thoughts for exactly what they are, just thoughts. By learning to observe your thoughts in a detached manner, along with mindful breathing you begin to realise that your thoughts do not define you, you can then learn to disassociate from them and allow yourself to let them go, allow yourself to JUST BE in the moment. Experience life moment by moment, not living in the future or the past but living in the here and now.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Teaching

Mindfulness teaching includes practicing breathing exercises, mindful meditations, learning the art of just being, slowing down your inner world, learning to be kind to yourself with non-judgemental awareness and building new habits. When you can get into the habit of shifting your awareness to your breathing whenever you find yourself feeling anxious, you can eliminate stress and anxiety before it becomes something much worse.  Mindful breathing for stress and anxiety can help you in many ways and the techniques are simple to use.

Mindfulness and meditation are similar but there are some key differences, mindfulness is more about being in the moment and paying attention to your breathing, thoughts, feelings and your environment, whereas meditation is more focussed on clearing the mind of thoughts. The differences are subtle but profound.
